Having first aired in 1958, Blue Peter is the longest-running children’s TV show in the world. At one point or another, every kid will have watched at least one episode of the entertainment programme and perhaps even tried to get their hands on a Blue Peter Badge.
There have been 37 official presenters of the programme (as well as plenty of pets!), and here’s what some of the 1990s team have got up to since…
Yvette Fielding (1987-92)
Often voted as the best Blue Peter presenter ever in online polls, Yvette Fielding was only 18 years old when she joined the programme, and stayed for exactly five years – not one day more or less. She went on to present for an older audience, and earned a reputation for her paranormal programmes.
Whether it was Most Haunted, Ghosthunting With… or Celebrity Ghost Stories, Fielding perfected the art of screaming in night vision. Now 48, she has appeared on various panel shows such as Through The Keyhole and 8 Out Of 10 Cats, whilst in 2015 she took part in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, but was eliminated after 16 days in camp.
John Leslie (1989-94)
When he joined Blue Peter in 1989, John Leslie became the show’s first ever Scottish presenter, whilst at 6ft 4in, he is also the tallest host in the programme’s history. His career looked set to take off when he departed in 1994, as he got a job on This Morning, was the new Wheel of Fortune host and presented the UK version of Survivor.
However, Leslie quickly went from one of the most popular men on TV to hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons as he faced accusations of indecent assault, sexual assault and rape. In some cases he was never charged; in others, he was cleared. But the 52-year-old has not had a presenting job since the early 2000s, recently admitting that he had at times contemplated suicide.
