For any kid growing up in the 90s, Barbie, Ken and Action Man were ubiquitous. You could literally buy any combination of accessory for them, from high heels to hair and from roller skates to off-road vehicles – and there were many a cheaper alternative knocking around too.

In 1997 a Danish eurodance group by the name Aqua, released a song titled Barbie Girl, which referenced the children’s toy almost exclusively.

The song became an instant hit in the UK – partly due to its sub context and innuendo nature – and twenty years on we’re still listening to it.

In fact, so much so that the official Barbie Girl YouTube video has more than 357 million views to date. Add that to the fact the song was already eight years old when YouTube first launched and it’s even more impressive.

The mixed group formed in 1989 and have released three albums: Aquarium in 1997, Aquarius in 2000 and Megalomania eleven years later. The group have sold an estimated 33 million albums and singles, making them the most profitable Danish band ever.

So what ever happened to the members of Aqua once their worldwide stardom faded?

True fans will be able to tell you that they toured Australia in 2014 for their ‘hits’ tour. But if you’ve only ever heard of them from the Barbie Girl song, then you’re in for a shock when you see what they look like nowadays.
