The Britain’s Got Talent presenter checked himself into rehab back in June following a tearful admission to his best friend and TV partner Ant as well as his wife, Lisa Armstrong.
And now he has opened up on his stay in rehab for the first time since checking himself in, and has revealed, shockingly, that he almost died as a result of his addiction to high-strength painkillers.
He also revealed that he begged Lisa to call him an ambulance after an “insane” binge on pills which saw him rushed to hospital at 5am.
Ant, 41, who is one of the most well-known faces on British TV, was reportedly in tears as he revealed his secret battle with his demons to his wife Lisa and co-star Dec, also 41.
The shocking revelation was in danger of compromising his clean-cut, family friendly image, and it threw his entire TV career into jeopardy and the unknown.
Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, Ant said: “I was at the point where anything – prescription drugs, not-prescription drugs – I would take.
“And take them with alcohol, which is ridiculous. The doctors told me, ‘You could have killed yourself’.”
Speaking before he entered rehab, he said: “The first step is to admit to yourself you need help.”
“I’ve let people down, I’m truly sorry.
“I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I’m truly sorry.
“I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends through this really difficult time.
He added: “I have spoken out because I think it is important that people ask for help if they are through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.”
Since then, his friends and work colleagues have given Ant their support, including Simon Cowell, and have reassured fans everywhere that he is winning his drink and drugs battle.
