Teenager fought a four-year-battle with rare cancer
After Callie Blackwell’s received news that her son only had ‘three days to live’, she made a decision which concluded in curing the rare cancer that was killing him.
Young Deryn had been fighting a one-in-seven-billion form of cancer called Langerhans cell sarcoma. The despairing mother chose to give her son cannabis oil, just to ease his symptoms after he’d suffered with immense pain – but she believes it led to his amazing recovery.
Callie revealed after three unsuccessful bone marrow transplants, she felt she had nothing to lose. Appearing on This Morning she explained to Holly and Phil: “Honestly the effects of it blew my mind. It wasn’t what I expected.
“We noticed within half an hour he was chilled out, the anxiety stopped, he was able to relax.”
Deryn was first diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 10. He told the hosts: “I planned my funeral. It was gonna be fancy dress and I’d chosen all the costumes for people.”
Discussing how she came to the decision of treating her son with cannabis oil, Callie explained: “When his secondary cancer arrived, I turned to the internet and cannabis just kept popping up, but I would dismiss it and dismiss it.
“The morphine wasn’t working against his hands or stomach, so I asked for a cannabis-based product and she said, ‘We can’t because it hasn’t been licensed for children’.”
But making the decision, Callie revealed: “I thought, ‘What have I got to lose?’”
Deryn has now made a full recovery and is reportedly “completely healthy”, despite enduring four years of pain. The youngster has aspirations of becoming a chef when he’s older and is looking forward to his life after previously planning his own funeral.
Viewers watching from home praised Callie and couldn’t believe how brave Deryn had been.
