This has to be the saddest ‘Where Are They Now’ you will ever read. The curse of Power Rangers.
Power Rangers is set to return, in movie format on March 24, 2017. So we thought we’d look for the original cast of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and write a where are they now, to bring back some wonderful memories for our 90’s readers. It’s Morphin’ Time…
But my excitement for writing this article ended right there. Upon researching the actors who played the spandex-costumed superheroes – as well as those in other main and supporting roles – I discovered something rather disturbing…
I discovered a very strange phenomenon from which many of the former-characters suffered. It began when researching the five original Rangers, Jason, Trini, Kimberly, Billy and Zack. Read on and discover the horrifying curse of Power Rangers…
Thuy Trang performed as the very first Yellow Ranger, Trini Kwan. Trang represented the Yellow Rangers between 1993 and 1994, participating in an incredible 81 episodes. After leaving the show in 1994, she went on to perform in two movies and a documentary.
Thuy Trang tragically died in 2001, aged 27 in a car crash. And so begins the curse of Power Rangers.
Richard Genelle played Ernie, the Youth Centre owner and bearer of advice to the teenage superheroes. He appeared in 116 episodes from 1993 to 1995 and also appeared in the original Power Rangers movie, featuring Ivan Ooze.
Genelle left the show to tackle his health problems but has since sadly passed away. The former-actor died of a heart-attack in December 2008, aged just 47.
Robert L. Manahan portrayed the alien, Zordon in MMPR. He shared the role with David Fielding who I believe provided Zordon’s voice. Bob Manahan performed in 75 episodes of the show.
Sadly Manahan lost his life in 2000 aged just 43 years of age. He died of an aneurism and is the third former MMPR actor to have died at a young age.
Machiko Soga played the visual character, Rita Repulsa in the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series, but didn’t voice the character.
Soga performed in the role from 1993 to 1994. Sadly, the Japanese actress passed away in 2006, aged 68 due to pancreatic cancer. Machiko Soga is believed to have been found alone in her home by a friend.
Power Rangers Curse
The Power Rangers curse doesn’t stop with the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers cast though. In fact, there’s a huge list of actors who have appeared or voiced in the show that are now no longer with us.
Here’s what the Pink Power Ranger looks like now Peta Rutter, who played the Mystic White Ranger, died of a brain tumour aged 50.
Edward Albert, who played the Red Rangers father, died of lung cancer aged 55.
Bob Papenbrook, who voiced Rito Revolto, Snizzard, Deviot, and other characters for several seasons and spinoffs. He died of chronic lung problems at age 50.
Jack Banning, who played Professor Phenomenus in Power Rangers In Space. He died of Pneumonia at age 73.
Erik Frank, who played David Trueheart in Power Rangers Zeo. The character was the brother of Tommy Oliver, who is lauded by many fans to be the greatest Ranger of all time. He was also real-life brothers with the former-Green and White Ranger. Erik died at age 29, but upon researching, the results come back as “unspecified illness.”
Richard Rabago, who played Master Lee, died at age 68 of natural causes.
Maurice Mendoza, who played Richie in 1994’s Might Morphin’ Power Rangers series died aged 39, but no specified reason can be found.
Alissa Ann Smego played the one-off part of Shawna in MMPR, 1994. in 2013, at 38 years old, she was found in her apartment, having committed suicide.
Incredible stuff. Let’s hope the actors in the new movie don’t follow suit. I won’t even go into the list of former-Power Rangers actors who have been arrested for murder.
