Sky Sports brought back Friday Night Football yesterday evening, as Rachel Riley and Jeff Stelling hosted coverage of Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to West Ham United, along with guests Thierry Henry, Jamie Redknapp and Alan Pardew.
The game was a key fixture in this year’s Premier League title race, but Manuel Lanzini’s second half goal gave the Hammers a surprise victory, meaning that it is now incredibly hard for Spurs to catch Chelsea at the top of the table. In fact, the Blues can secure the trophy before Mauricio Pochettino’s side even play again if they beat Middlesbrough this weekend and West Brom next Friday.
It means that for the second season in a row, Tottenham will have chased top spot for virtually the entire season but end up with nothing to show for their efforts. This was something that Countdown‘s maths queen Rachel picked up on after full-time, stating: “It’s déjà vu for Spurs, isn’t it? Proper bottle job.”
Now, the term ‘bottle job’ seems a little harsh considering Spurs have never really had the title race in their own hands but have pushed Chelsea all the way winning nine games in a row before last night. However, many fans didn’t take to Rachel’s comments very kindly at all and some of the reaction towards the 31-year-old was completely out of order. We don’t want to show you some of really vile tweets, so here are some slightly kinder ones…
But Riley wasn’t just going to go to bed with all this abuse being thrown at her. After the show finished, she took to Twitter to respond to the “hideous” personal attacks.
Didn’t mean any offence to Spurs or their fans tonight just a surprise to slip v WHam with their form on paper. Personal abuse is hideous.
