Remember Pop Idol star, Rik Waller? Here is what he is up to now!
Waller rose to fame in 2001, when he appeared and wowed audiences on Pop Idol, the predecessor to X Factor.
At just 20 years of age, the Kent singer became a hit when he appeared on Pop Idol, but disaster struck when he had to leave the competition early, due to a bout of laryngitis.
The larger-than-life act was replaced by Darius Danesh, but that didn’t stop the young singer from fulfilling his dream of becoming a pop idol.
In fact Waller released a beautiful cover of the single ‘I Will Always Love You’, which became a huge hit for him, reaching number 6 in the charts.
The memorable personality returned to screens in 2002, when he was cast in Celebrity Fit Club, but was kicked off when he was caught binge eating, sending his career into a bit of a nose-dive.
Rik met a girl and eventually got engaged to her. Rik became a pagan, like his girlfriend and thus stopped performing. When the two got engaged, Rik explained:
“This is definitely the real thing and, although our pagan beliefs mean that ours isn’t an engagement in the conventional sense, we have bought rings as a gesture of love and commitment to each other,’ said the singer”
Sadly for Rik, after quitting singing altogether in the late 2000’s, work dried up and the former-pop idol star became penniless. He explained: “The most demoralising thing I’ve ever had to do was queue up at the job centre and have people look at me saying, ‘What a failure’.
“When you’ve lost the ability to do the job you’ve always done, it’s an incredible stab in the back to find people are actually laughing at you.”
Waller turned his life around in 2013, becoming an exam invigilator.
He now works full time overseeing secondary school exams for Piper Assessment, in Sittingbourne, Kent
