15) Michael Woods
After impressing Leeds United’s youth team, Michael Woods controversially signed for Chelsea in 2006, aged 16. He made a handful of cup appearances for the Blues, but injuries stalled his development. Chelsea released the young midfielder in 2011 and he joined Yeovil Town.
Upon not impressing at either Yeovil or Doncaster Rovers, Michael Woods dropped down into the Conference and signed for Harrogate Town. Here he found form and scored 9 goals in 37 league games. Woods signed for League Two side Hartlepool United after just one season with Harrogate. The midfielder continues to perform for the Monkey Hangers today.
14) Jonjo Shelvey
Shelvey began his youth career with Arsenal, before moving to West Ham United and finally Charlton Athletic. He made his first team debut in 2008 for the Red Robins. Shelvey caught the eye of Merseyside giants, Liverpool after a string of good performances. The midfielder joined the Reds in 2010 where he struggled to command a place in the first XI.
He left for Swansea in 2013 before moving to Newcastle United in 2016. Shelvey continues to perform for the Toon in the English Championship and is regarded as one of their best players.
13) Fabian Delph
Delph rose through Bradford City’s youth team, before signing for Leeds United in 2001. He continued to develop as a youth player until 2006 when he made his debut. Delph impressed in Yorkshire and was snapped up by Premier League giants Aston Villa, where he continued to impress.
The midfielder mad a controversial move to Manchester City in 2015 after telling fans he was going nowhere. Injuries have halted his progress, but Delph has represented England at senior level. If he remains injury free, he can go on to have a fruitful career in Manchester.
12) Nathan Delfouneso
Making a name for himself at Aston Villa, Nathan Deldouneso looked like a star in the making. He became the clubs youngest ever European player when he debuted in the UEFA Cup at just 17 years old. His development stalled as he aged however and he found chances few and far between in the first team.
After a handful of loan spells the striker signed permanently for Blackpool. After one season with the Seasiders, he signed for Blackburn Rovers. In 2016, Delfouneso signed for Swindon Town, where he currently plays and has scored one league goal in 18 games.
11) Jack Rodwell
Rodwell continued to impress and was signed by Manchester City in 2012. Like many English players, his progress stalled at Manchester City as the club continued to sign foreign superstars. The Southport born player moved to Sunderland in 2014, where he continues to play today.
